We just returned from our vacation to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina which was a wonderful week away. We travelled by car which means we spent 2 days driving. 2 DAYS! I am one lucky mama that my kids are excellent travellers. They tolerate the car really well and they remain relatively well behaved and happy. But like most kids, boredom can hit pretty hard on a 14 hour day in the car.
Every road trip we take I put together some sort of activity for the car. Right now the kids are obsessed with blind bags! Have you heard of blind bags? They are small toy collectibles that come in a single sealed pack, bag or box. You don’t know what you have until you open it and many have several series or waves to collect. Where do you get them? Walmart, Target, grocery stores and some dollar stores. They run for about 2-3$ each. I collected this stash over a few months as a few went on sale.
Hatchimals, Mashems, Fashems, Num Noms, Tsum Tsums you name it, my kids are collecting it. I decided to use that excitement to my advantage and put together some Road Trip Surprise Bags loaded with blind bags.
The plan was every time we crossed a border or state line, a new surprise would be pulled from their bag for them to open. They were PUMPED to say the least!
I started with 2 small reusable bags from the dollar store to hold each kids surprises. I was hoping for some Halloween themed bags but we ended up with springtime. Oh well!
I then added self adhesive velcro strips to each bag so that they would seal. The first reason was so no one peeked! The main reason was if they fell over in the car (which they did several times over), we didn’t have small toys rolling around the van for several hours with sad little ones asking for mama to pick up a collectible figure from the trunk while sitting in the front seat.
Now just fill and seal!
The kids LOVED this surprise and these were the toys that they played with on the trip. So I didn’t have to pack any extra for them if we had a rainy day.
What do you do to pass time on long car trips?
