Today I am sharing a super simple way to remove egg from the ingredients of a box of brownie mix. I am not much of a baker and while I am improving, When I am in a pinch I still go to a box of cake mix and look for ways to make them safe for our kiddo with allergies over try something from scratch.
This substitution could not be be easier. All you need is applesauce!
I used a box of Betty Crocker Chocolate Chunk Brownie mix, a jar of unsweetened applesauce and a really fun poop emoji treat mold! The treat mold is from Walmart. What’s more fun than a brownie emoji poop I ask?!
To replace eggs in a boxed recipe is as simple as following the ingredients as outlined on the package, but for every egg needed, you skip the egg and add 1/4 cup of applesauce. This box called for 1 egg so I substituted 1/4 cup of applesauce. If it had called for 2 eggs, I would have replaced that with 1/2 cup of applesauce and so on.
If you also are using your Poop Emoji mold, the box should nicely make 6 poops… treats… poops? (That was a weird sentence to type…)
The pan instructions said to let your treats totally cool before you try to remove them. That was no joke! I had 2 VERY excited kids who were dying to try them and I tried to take them out too early and they broke apart a little. Still super delicious and no egg made it safe for my egg allergy kid to enjoy!
Do you have a preferred way to substitute egg in a recipe? Do you ever make substitutions to make your recipes healthier? I would love to hear your tricks!
