And boy do I have a couple good ones!
We are embarking on finally decorating and adding personal touches to our home after a few years of doing larger updates and upgrades. That doesn’t mean along the way we (that means me) didn’t make a few big decor mistakes. The following are my top 5 home design and decor mistakes and how I plan to fix them.
- Kitchen colour and countertops
When we updated our kitchen from very worn and dated looking cabinets to white shaker style cabinets, I decided I wanted the walls with cabinets on them to be an accent wall in a darker colour. My thought was that it would make the cabinets pop. The colour I chose was an awful grey-green that after a year of sun, started to turn a yellowish hue. It reminds me of the tupperware my mom had in the early 80’s.The countertops we made ourselves using a dark grey granite tile. We wanted a nice glossy dark colour for the contrast but the tile is hard to keep clean along the seams and the dark tile along with the wall colour, sucks the light out of an otherwise light filled room. Our kitchen has tons of natural light pouring in, but with the counter and walls so dark, the room feels dark.
- Granite Sink
I wanted this black granite sink so badly! I practically begged Mike to agree to blow over $400 on a sink and within 6 months I was totally over it. It’s impossible to keep clean, it’s covered in water marks and every crumb shows. The plan to fix 1&2, the counter and sink will eventually be replaced. A clean, white backsplash will be put in and the terrible green paint will be painted over to match the rest of the house.
- Dark furniture
So much of our furniture is very dark in colour. They are beautiful pieces, but with 2 kids, it’s hard to keep it looking clean and neat. It also makes all of our furniture feel too matchy matchy. If I could go back in time, I would have selected pieces that coordinated but gave each room some variation and interest. Fixing this would involve keeping the rest of the decor, textiles etc, light and fresh to counter the dark woods and fabrics of our furniture. I have plans to re-upholster these dining chairs with a cream colour. That won’t happen until the littles can eat a meal without slopping in through 3 rooms. So approximately after they move out.
- Boring light fixtures.
Our house came with a lot of very dated light fixtures. All of them needed to be replaced and in an effort to just get to a blank, clean slate, we chose too quickly on very basic and boring lighting in areas that really should have had more interesting and functional lighting.
- Not using colours I really like.
I spent a lot of time keeping things neutral because we weren’t ready to decorate and didn’t know how we wanted to decorate, that everything is just so PLAIN! When we have used colour, we chose the wrong one, or something that quickly went out of style. My first room to get a decorative touch will be our master bedroom as I complete the $100 Room Challenge along with a lot of other great bloggers. I hope you follow along as I try to fix my decorating mistakes and take our home from bland to beautiful one baby step at a time!
