Next month our oldest will turn 5. FIVE! That is half way to 10 years old! To celebrate Penny will be hosting her first birthday party with her school friends and she could not be more excited. She has asked for a Moana theme as we are still in full Moana obsession over here. I would say we watch it at least 5 times a week and I may or may not listen to the soundtrack constantly in the car.
In true Penny fashion, her favourite characters from Moana are the most unlikely. Tamatoa the giant crab comes in at number one and Kakamora are a close second. You can see them on the cover of the Moana Blu-Ray.
For a table decoration I thought it would be cute to have a couple Kakamora serve as centrepieces and double as a weights to hold down the tablecloth as 10 ravenous 5 year olds sit down to lunch.
Making your own Kakamora is and really fun and wont take much time at all.
You will need:
Coconut shaped drinking cups (I got mine at Dollar Tree $1.25 each)
Paint Pens (Mine were from Walmart $14.97 for the pack)
Materials to make hat/helmet/horns/hair
Newspaper to protect your working surface
First, remove flower. Sketch your Kakamora’s face with the sharpie on the side of the cup. I googled some movie images to give me an idea what to sketch. Don’t worry if the sketch looks off. You are going to cover it in paint.
Trace and fill in your sketch with paint pens and allow to completely dry. You may want to so a second coat with lighter colours depending how well the paint pen covered and the look you are going for.
Before and after paint.
Reassemble cup and add hat/helmet/horns/hair to your Kakamora. Using the straw holes I added grass from an old kids hula skirt to create some simple hair.
And this is the finished product. You can always make them more detailed or more simple if you like. I think these will be just perfect for our party table!
Fun Disney Fact: Most Disney movie fans know that Disney animators love to sneak in “Easter Eggs” or nod to movies/characters from past and upcoming films. Did you know that Baymax from Big Hero 6 makes an appearance in the Kakamora scene? He’s there! Take a closer look next time you watch Moana and see if you can find him!
