I love Skip Hop products. I think they are well made and stand up to the wear and tear of the average child. Penny got this Skip Hop backpack almost 2 years go and it is still in such great shape. After a full year of preschool, half of junior kindergarten and countless trips to visit grandparents, the vinyl zipper pull tore making it difficult for her to open and close her backpack independently.
I would hate to get rid of it over a torn zipper pull, so I did a quick DIY fix to extend the life of her super cute hedgehog backpack.
This is how you can add some life to your own items with this quick tassel zipper pull.
You will need:
Embroidery floss in your desired colours
Keychain loop (small and thin)
Select the colours of embroidery floss you would like to use. I chose 2 colours, one for the tassel and one for the band.
With the embroidery floss still intact in its wrappers, loop the thread into the keychain ring. You can use a coin to pry the ring open to loop through all the floss at once. This is the tricky part and it may take a couple of tries.
Take a length of your second contrasting colour and tie a simple knot just under the keychain ring. Make the knot as tight as you can. Keep wrapping and knotting the contrast colour until you have a nice tight band around the tassel.
With your floss still in the wrapper, slide one of the wrappers down until you reach your desired length of your tassel. Snip the tassel off the floss with nice sharp scissors.
And that’s it! Your tassel is all finished. Now just attach the keychain tassel to the zipper and enjoy!
I’m really glad we were able to save this little backpack. I hope this really quick DIY tassel tutorial breathes some new life into something you love too!
