Have you ever considered a vacation to one of Disney’s beach properties? Have you worried that it would be missing some of the Disney magic you know you would find at Disney World or Disneyland? Well, worry not. We are sharing 5 very convincing reasons you should visit Disney Hilton Head Island Resort, located on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Our family took a week long trip there recently and truly fell in love with the resort and the South Carolina Low Country. Here is our experience and it includes lots of pictures and pixie dust!
Beautiful Resort Property
If you have stayed at a Disney Resort before you know what I mean. Everything is so perfectly themed and maintained. Disney Hilton Head Island Resort is located on the Harbour River with beautiful marsh views on one side and Shelter Cove Marina on the other. It’s surrounded by huge mossy oaks with hammocks every few metres. It screams, slow down and relax! Also a bonus, it is located only minutes from groceries and shopping and off resort dining is a short walk away.
When you pull up to the main building, Live Oak Lodge, you will find a cute Mickey topiary which is pretty much one of the only characters you will find here, and a sweet dog house for the resort dog, Shadow. And yes, Shadow is a real dog and you may get to meet the pup herself!
The Big Dipper pool is open all day and even has a waterslide for the more adventurous swimmers. This was Penny’s first waterslide! The staff are all friendly and accommodating and took the time to learn all of our names. They made the kids feel super special and joked with them every day.
Just look at these trees… And the moss! I could sit in these hammocks for days. And I did!
Community Hall and Broad Creek Mercantile and Rentals are also by the pool area for basic shopping and sundries, bike rentals and fishing rentals. This is where you can look up the day’s activities, tide high and low times and buy yourself a snack. Or a Vera Bradley bag like I did!
From Broad Creek Mercantile you can make your way on to the fishing pier to watch shore birds or spend a few hours fishing and crabbing.
And then the sunsets. Nothing is prettier than a sunset over a quiet marsh.
Large and Well Appointed Accommodations
We stayed in the 2 bedroom Villa with Mike’s parents and the 6 of us never felt crowded. The villa was spacious, stocked with everything you would ever need, you just bring the food, and so beautifully decorated. It was bigger than my first house! We stayed on a first floor villa which was raised about 8ft off the ground which is a flood precaution so we did have to climb about 8 steps to get to the front door. We left our stroller on the landing after the first day of dragging it in and out.
The back deck had a marsh view and we spent many lazy mornings drinking tea and watching the birds.
Private Beach House
Even though the resort is not on the ocean, it’s about 1km away, Disney Hilton Head Island Resort does have a private beach house on the ocean. It is a walkable distance, but we always chose to drive. They have ample parking if you do prefer to drive over.
Even our Ethan, 9 months old at the time, could really lay back and relax!
The beach is lovely. It was a bit cool on our visit as we came in October, but the kids played and splashed in the water for hours. We spent endless hours in the pools and if I was honest, I am a pool person.
The beach house has a lovely pool with lifejackets provided, an arcade, Signals snack bar, small splash pad and ping pong. Lots to do and lots of shady spots to get out of the sun.
Inside the pool house is a beautiful area to sit and rest, read, play checkers and socialize. The decor was amazing and I loved all of the coastal touches.
There is a lot going on on the resort. Everyday there are planned activities which can be found on the Happenings boards around the resort. Some activities have a small fee associated with them but many do not. Goofy bingo, shark tooth necklaces, tie-dye t-shirts and sand dollar paintings are just a few. They are well planned out and have lots of interaction with cast members.
We did LOTS of fishing from the pier. I think I ran back and forth for bait 10 times! The kids loved it and the birds loved when we turned our backs on our bait. Ha!
A few times each week there is a story time with B’lou Crabbe. He tells great stories with his pup Shadow. I enjoyed the nature walk and story with B’lou very much but it did go over Penny’s head a bit. It was hard for her to follow and all she wanted to do was pet Shadow. I think older kids would really get a lot more out of this experience than young kids and toddlers.
Almost every night was a campfire story and sing along or a movie under the stars.
There is of course the pools and lunching poolside with lunch from the Tide me Over snack bar.
Crabbing on the pier was very popular however I didn’t see anyone catch any crab. However you will meet a lot of people giving it a try and everyone has a different tip to share. My best tip is there is a hook at the bottom of the crab basket and I learned that the hard way.
There is one playground here which had that lovely bouncy ground cover. We only played here once for a few minutes but if a playground is a must have for your kids, they have one and it is nicely fenced in.
Cornhole and shuffleboard is also available in several locations around the resort.
One of the crafts we did so was the sand dollar painting. Penny loved working on her sand dollar with one of her favourite cast members and we still have it up in her room on display.
Dole Whips, Mickey Bars and Mickey Waffles
Need I say anything more?! Some classic and beloved Disney eats in a relaxing low country environment. Yes please! I enjoyed my very first Dole whip here and our kiddos had their first Mickey bars and Mickey waffles here. Is there anything better than Mickey shaped food?
We loved our time here. We felt the Disney magic without the hustle and bustle of theme park crowds. We had a laid back, Disney vacation that was truly relaxing. We had a great time as a family but this would be an amazing location for just the adults. The relaxing atmosphere and beautiful surroundings has put it near the top of my list to return to celebrate something like an anniversary. I would recommend it to anyone and we are looking forward to going back again one day. See ya real soon Hilton Head!
