Throughout the month of March I have been participating in the $100 Room Challenge, a home decorating and DIY challenge put together by Erin at Lemons Lavender and Laundry. One room gets made over with $100 dollars in one month. This was really a great challenge to take a long look at what you have, what you can do on your own and what you need to put together a functional and beautiful space that wont break the bank. Another wonderful bonus, I had a deadline! I had committed so there was no more putting things off for later. I loved being on a strict timeline because things actually got done!
Let’s take one step back and look at the before. I was lucky in the sense that I had a very good jumping off point. I liked the wall colour, the furniture and storage. I literally had my full budget to dress up the room and make it pretty.
The room was fine, however, it was dull and boring and hardly a pretty place to spend much time in. Our room is where our kids go to rest or play alone, it’s where they nap when they don’t feel well and where we sit and watch movies together after a long day. So it is a space that deserved some well earned love.
Without further ado, this is our master bedroom now.
The bed wall got some Wall Pops pineapple decals and some homemade printable art. The bed got a light pink duvet set and matching pillow. Finally a little colour! The throw blanket was a baby blanket made by my Grandmother. Now when the kiddos feel like a nap, they can snuggle up with a blanket made for them more than 30 years ago.
I moved around some pictures from other parts of the house to coordinate with the walls. By request of the Mr, his favourite picture our daughter drew of him cutting down a tree remains on his side.
The chair which housed several hoodies now holds a throw pillow (already had) and above it, a simple ombre painting I made with a 4$ canvas and craft paint I already had on hand.
The rubbermaid bin which was holding our throw blankets is gone and in it’s place, a simple but pretty bamboo hamper with a lid. Huge improvement.
The sunburst mirror from Home Sense found a home of it’s own next to the window.
The final piece of the makeover was the spaghetti of wires under the TV. I have always hated how they looked and the day before the challenge ended, Mike and I finally tackled hiding the wires. Nothing like leaving it the last minute!
Here is a before reminder of the mess of wire we looked at every day. Just gorgeous. As you can imagine our puppy, Minnie, has been having a blast pulling on the wires which was both ridiculously annoying and dangerous. Our initial solution years ago was to use a plastic conduit to cover the wire. You can see how well that worked out.
Mike, the handyman that he is, moved the outlet up behind the TV and moved the cable wire up to the level of our satellite box. He removed the old conduit cover and patched up the walls with compound and paint that we already had on hand.
This is the after! This is my favourite part of the entire room. I love clean look of the hidden wires and now the space underneath is screaming for a nice chest or something. But that is for another day!
So that is our room! I hope you enjoyed following along with the makeover and I hope you have a look at some of the other $100 Room Challenges my blogger friends completed in the links below.
I have had a great time working on the $100 Room Challenge. I loved getting down to work on a space in our home and I loved watching the rooms of other bloggers come together. I learned so much from their projects and I got so much inspiration for the next challenge. Thank you Erin for putting this together, I cant wait to do it again!
